If you’re looking for a simple way to add more fiber, protein, and omega-3s to your child’s diet with minimal effort, chia seeds for kids are the way to go.

Chia seeds for kids are basically the equivalent of a nutrient-dense sprinkle that they’ll barely notice – so it just makes sense to add them.

I’ll break down what chia seeds are, why chia seeds for kids is a must, and simple ways to incorporate them into the snacks and meals you’re already offering your kids.

What Are Chia Seeds

Chia seeds for kids

Chia seeds are a small, but mighty black, or white seed that comes from the Salvia hispanica plant. They really don’t taste like much, but rather add texture to whatever you add them too.

The unique thing about chia seeds is that they can absorb 10x their weight in liquid, helping create a gel-like consistency while also basically disappearing. Because they can absorb so much liquid, they help support hydration and digestion – keeping things regular and moving if you know what I mean.

You can find chia seeds in the baking aisle of your grocery store. We also enjoy the milled chia seeds from Tiny Sprouts with added probiotics and vitamin D.

Nutritional Benefits of Chia Seeds for Kids

Chia seeds for kids are a no-brainer. They’re loaded with fiber, plant-based protein, and ALA omega-3 fatty acids. They also contain calcium, magnesium, and iron – important nutrients to support growing kids.

Here’s a breakdown of the nutritional benefits of chia seeds for kids with just 1 tablespoon:

  • Protein: 2 grams – helps support muscle growth and repair
  • Fiber: 5 grams – supports digestion and regular poops
  • Omega-3s (ALA): 2,500 mg – important for brain development
  • Calcium: 80 mg – roughly the same amount as 1/4 cup of milk
  • Iron: 1 mg – helps support healthy brain development
  • Magnesium: 40 mg – important for muscle and nerve health

While it might not seem like a 1 tablespoon of chia seeds, or even half of that, could offer many benefits, every little bit helps!

If your child is extra cautious about adding chia seeds to their plate, try incorporating them into sensory play and science experiments. Because of their water-absorbing and gel-like powers, they work great for hands-on sensory play. Plus, activities with chia seeds can make them taste-safe too, depending on what other ingredients you use.

  • Chia seed slime: mix: mix 1/4 cup chia seeds with 1 1/2 cups water, food coloring, and 1 cup of corn starch (adjust as needed). Get the full recipe here.
  • Edible sensory bin: Use the chia seed slime to set up a sensory bin and let them scoop, stir, or use their imagination with small toys.
  • Sprout chia seeds on sponges: wet a sponge, sprinkle with chia seeds, and place it by a window. Make sure to keep the sponge moist and watch the seeds grow.
  • Make a DIY chia pet: use a small glass or plastic cup to draw or paint a funny face on, fill with soil, add chia seeds, and place by a window and continue to water to keep moist.
