As a pediatric dietitian and mom, I’m a huge fan of dips.  Dipping can be the key to kids trying new foods, especially if it’s this tasty hot cocoa dip.

I’ve seen a different version of hot cocoa dip circulating every social media platform and I believe it’s made with Cool Whip and cream cheese, and maybe even some marshmallow fluff.  Sounds delicious, but instantly I wondered how would this taste with yogurt?

I love using yogurt in dips, specifically Greek yogurt, because it adds valuable nutrients like protein, calcium, and Vitamin D.

Sometimes when you try to add nutritional value to already delicious recipes, it can be pretty disappointing, but not in this case.

This hot cocoa dip with vanilla yogurt is the perfect dip to whip up for holiday parties, movie nights, or just to enjoy as a snack and the best part is that it’s so easy!

What You’ll Need to Make Hot Cocoa Dip

This hot cocoa dip really only requires two ingredients, yogurt and hot cocoa mix, but the toppings are what make it magical!

Vanilla Greek Yogurt

I like using Greek yogurt because it has more protein than regular yogurt, but either works great.  I also prefer using the vanilla flavored yogurt for more flavor.

Hot Cocoa Mix

Who doesn’t have a packet of Swiss Miss hot cocoa lying around?  This hot cocoa recipe uses one hot cocoa packet, but you can use 2-3 tablespoons of a bulk hot cocoa mix as well.

Feel free to add or take away hot cocoa mix to adjust to your preference.

Mini Marshmallows

We always have mini marshmallows around whether it’s for hot cocoa or whipping up a pan of rice Krispie bars.

The mini marshmallows are one of the main reasons my kids dig into this dip, along with the fun sprinkles too.

Crushed Peppermint Candy Canes

Hot cocoa and peppermint are meant to be together.  That’s why adding crushed peppermint candy canes to this hot cocoa dip is a must!

You can buy already crushed peppermint candy canes, or crush up a few candy canes yourself.

Sprinkles

We always add sprinkles to yogurt, so why not add them to this hot cocoa dip.  There’s so many fun holiday sprinkles you can purchase and you can easily adapt this hot cocoa dip to any holiday by changing up the sprinkles.

How to Make Hot Cocoa Dip

You can easily whip this hot cocoa dip up in a matter of a few minutes.  All you need to do is mix together two cups of yogurt with one packet of hot cocoa mix until its well combined.

Once your hot cocoa dip is mixed up, transfer it to whatever bowl you’ll use to serve it in.  From here you’ll add your mini marshmallows either to a portion of the dip or cover the entire top.  Then sprinkle your crushed peppermint and sprinkles.

If you’re serving this hot cocoa dip later or traveling with it, wait to put on the crushed peppermint candy canes and sprinkles until right before you serve it to prevent the colors from bleeding.

Variations

This hot cocoa dip isn’t limited to the month of December, you can change up the sprinkles based on the holiday and enjoy it anytime of year; Valentines and Easter are perfect examples.

How to Store Hot Cocoa Dip

Store your hot cocoa dip in an airtight container in the fridge for three to seven days. I recommend waiting to put your crushed peppermint and sprinkles on until right before you serve it.

If you’ve left your dip out for four hours or more, you’re better off tossing it, just to be safe.

What to Serve With It

The best part about this dip, other than how easy it is to make, is that there are so many things you can dip in it.  Keep it simple with graham crackers, add fresh strawberries, or even your favorite cookie!  Basically anything that goes well with chocolate will pair perfectly with this dip.

I added the bowl of dip to a fun snowflake tray where I added all the dippable ingredients surrounding the hot cocoa dip bowl.  You can use whatever tray you’d like, but it’s always fun to add a holiday twist.
